A release’s day can be a turning point. You don’t want people to forget a song you have worked so hard on.
How can you prepare for your release date?
Let’s look at some ways you can make your release more successful in the weeks leading up to it…
Upload early
You can upload your music earlier to your distributor to get more time to run a successful promotion campaign leading up to your drop release.
We recommend uploading your files at least 4 to 6 weeks before the release date.
Artists can upload tracks up to a year in advance. One could create a release schedule for the whole year and upload multiple releases that will drop over 12 months.
Playlists to pitch
Once your release has been added to Spotify’s system, you can pitch it directly for inclusion on their playlists editors.
Although you can pitch through Spotify for Artists for free, it’s best to do this well before the release date. It would be best to start the pitching at least two weeks in advance.
Spotify editors receive thousands of track pitches every week. Make sure you have enough time to listen and consider yours.
Share your pre-save URL
Pre-save or pre-orders could make a huge difference in your release day stream and download figures.
The algorithm on platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music also notices when users save their music. This increases your chances of landing on algorithmic playlists such as Release Radar or Discover Weekly.
Make social media teasers.
Your fans and followers should get a sneak peek at your new release before it is released. A great way to get their attention is to post a short 15-second clip of your track on social media or give them a glimpse at the album artwork.
To create amazing video teasers, you can use After Effects and Adobe Premiere. Start by creating an MP4 video clip and then laying some of your audio (perhaps the track’s hook?) over your artwork.
Your snippets and artwork can be as creative or simple as you like. Use the many features available on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Stories, reels, polls and many more. These will all engage your audience and spark excitement around your next release.
Make sure to update your profile.
Your social media profiles and streaming platforms should be up-to-date with the latest artwork and press photos.
To promote your tracks, update your header images and pin your pre-save links to your profile. Some artists even change their Twitter names to reflect the release name and date.
Secure media coverage
A great PR campaign can help a track gain momentum and reach a wider audience.
Send your release to Soundcloud as a private Soundcloud link or unlisted YouTube video, and let everyone know.
Make a music video
A music video that you publish with your new release is a great way of maximizing the hype and attracting the attention of fans and media, and the press.
Viral videos and video marketing have never been more effective in promoting your music, thanks to visual-based platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Why? That’s easy. Videos can be immersive and engaging. They can also add depth and tangibility to your music, which is something that listeners can view and share with their friends.
Independent artists may find this daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. You can make great music videos on a DIY budget. Sometimes, the most amazing music videos have been made from very little. You’re ready to go.
Organize events
Live shows are back in the plans now that the world is open again after the pandemic. To celebrate your new song and create buzz among your fans, why not hold a release party?
It cannot be easy to arrange live gigs depending on where you are located. Live streaming is a great option. You have many options to live to stream performance and reach your fans from the comfort of your own home.
