VST plugins are also upgrading in this era of digital music production, a time of unprecedented expansion and upgrade. We need to keep up with the latest releases of these plugins because we could be missing out on something important that will improve our workflow and mix quality.
Since following all these manufacturers and developers (if you need to be added to their mailing list) can be exhausting, articles like this one exist. You can certainly follow their latest releases and test out their VSTs. But it’s better to have someone else honestly opinion them.

What Is VST
VST is an acronym for “Virtual Studio Technology.” The term speaks for itself. It is a technology used to create virtualized music in mixing or production studios.
The modern music producer can’t work without this, as more and more people have moved from “hands-on,” traditional mixing and music creation to a digital approach.
There are two main types of VSTs: instruments and effects.
Most of the instruments are banks that contain instruments like synthesizers, pianos, orchestras, and more. Some devices, such as drums, have VSTs that are specifically tailored for them.
The effects are based on the mixing equipment and products used in studios, such as compressors and equalizers.
This article will focus on VST effects and list them in no particular order. The ten choices below are probably 90% of our mixes, and our mixing process wouldn’t be the same without these. Let’s get to the list.
Pro-Q 3 from FabFilterType: Equalizer
This plugin was referred to as “our good old friend” in some of our tutorial videos, and with good reason. This plugin is probably the first one we use on most channels in a session. It is a powerful and accurate EQ that also includes a spectral analyzer, which allows you to view the frequency curve and react accordingly.
The Pro Q 3 has a new feature: it offers dynamic EQ mode. This means that the dynamic designer is applied to the band selected. Signals are attenuated based on the volume of the area selected. This is a great feature.
This EQ also allows you to place a band in a specific spot within the mix. You can place them to the left or right or in the middle. You can create some really cool frequency patterns by experimenting with EQing. Plugin worth having!
Universal Audio Neve 1073
Type: Equalizer
The 1073 preamp/EQ mic was designed by Rupert Neve, a renowned console designer. It dates back to 1970 and was part of a custom-built Neve console. Universal Audio chose to replicate this preamp/EQ in their list of incredible plugins.
The new 1073 plugin is vertically mounted, while the Legacy model is horizontal. It is also much larger and sweeter than the smaller Legacy UI. The plugin models the “golden” circuits 1073 with great accuracy, paying special attention to the transformer.
This is an excellent choice for recording vocals, acoustic instruments, and voiceovers. The warm tone of this preamp will make recorded instruments sound more natural. This is an excellent option if you don’t have or can’t afford a preamp.
Waves Abbey Road RS124
Type Compression
Another collaboration between Waves and Abbey Road Studios involves emulation hardware that is inextricably associated with the legendary studios. Has a unique sound that is a result of a careful emulation not just of one but of several iconic and unique compressors.
This compressor, they claim, was used to record all of the Beatles’ tracks at the Abbey Road studio. This suggests that the compressor has a vintage feel and will bring back a feeling that is similar to that of when these songs were recorded.
This is the plugin to use if you want some character in your compression. This compressor is also great for music with live instruments.
Waves CLA-2A Waves
Type Compression
Another classic. You can find this compressor in many studios. This is for a good reason. It’s one of the most popular compressors. The circuitry of the compressor already has all of the other parameters that are standard.
This compressor is great for vocals, acoustic/electric guitarists, and basses. It works well with digitally generated sounds, even though it’s an emulation of a vintage hardware unit.
We chose the Waves model because you don’t need to purchase a sound interface by UAD. It is available for immediate use after installation. It features zero latency and a limiter/compressor. There is also an analog mode in 50Hz or 60Hz. Try experimenting with them to get the best results.
Trash 2 by iZotope
Type Distortion
Trash 2 was created to be versatile. It can be used in a variety of ways. If you are an audio engineer looking for that extra gritty sound on a guitar recording or a drummer recording, then Trash is the tool to use. You can manipulate the settings and get unique distortion profiles.
Trash 2 has Multiband options that work well with Bass, guitars, and brass sections. It can also create very gentle distortion or very aggressive distortion.
It has a lot of presets you can tweak and choose from. This plugin is best used with digital sounds. We use it primarily on these elements.

C6 Multiband compressor by Waves
Type Compression
You can tell by now that we’re Waves fans. Waves plugins are what we use to learn our craft. We use this one a lot.
This multiband compressor is unique in that it has a Sidechaining Switch on each of the six bands. You can use this to do very complex compressions on any signal for a variety of creative and inventive purposes.
Install it, and then see what happens. You will definitely finish some compression tasks and be able to express yourself creatively. What else can you expect from a plugin?
